Fukui Prefectural Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum

The Fukui Prefectural Ichijodani Asakura Family Site Museum occupies an archaeological excavation site of a medieval castle town and displays over 800 artifacts spanning different periods. Among these are objects officially recognized as Important Cultural Properties in Japan.

The museum opened in 1981 following 50 years of continuous archaeological digging at this location, which exposed the medieval castle town of the Asakura family. The discoveries reveal how this settlement expanded and transformed across multiple centuries.

The Asakura residence stands as a full-scale reconstruction, revealing how residents of this medieval castle town arranged their homes and conducted daily activities. The furnished rooms convey the practical rhythm of life during that era.

The museum is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00 and sits in a convenient location within Fukui. Plan to spend at least two hours exploring the excavation grounds and viewing the displayed artifacts.

The museum preserves exposed stone foundations believed to be remnants of Ichijo-no-Irie, a medieval river port that once operated at this location. These visible original structures offer a rare glimpse into the castle town's actual construction.
