大雲寺, Buddhist temple in Edogawa district, Tokyo, Japan.
Taiun-ji is a Buddhist temple in Tokyo's Edogawa district, situated on spacious grounds. The site features a main hall, stone shrines, and a Niomon Gate with protective guardian statues marking the entrance.
The temple was founded in 1620 by Master Bonyo and had to relocate several times due to fires and earthquakes. It finally settled at its present location in 1931 after moving through different sites in the city.
The grounds hold many graves of Kabuki performers from the Edo and Meiji periods, which is why locals call it the 'Actor's Temple'. This connection draws visitors interested in the history of traditional Japanese theater.
The temple is roughly 15 minutes on foot from Edogawa Station or accessible by Keisei bus to the Mizue Saijo stop. Both options offer convenient ways to reach the grounds.
The grounds contain an enormous pine tree called Yogo no Matsu that stretches roughly 30 meters. It has been designated as a National Natural Monument and attracts visitors who appreciate its remarkable size and age.
