Nipro Hachiko Dome, Baseball stadium in Odate, Japan
Nipro Hachiko Dome is a sports venue in Ōdate built with a wooden structure of cypress and covered by a double Teflon membrane that lets natural light filter through the roof. The space holds roughly 5,000 spectators and offers parking for over 1,000 vehicles close to the station.
The stadium opened in June 1997 and took its current name in 2017 when Nipro, a medical equipment company, bought the naming rights. This change reflected a shift in how the venue was supported and promoted locally.
The name honors Hachiko, the famous Akita dog, and ties the venue to local identity in this region. Visitors can feel this connection to the dog breed and its heritage that runs deep in Ōdate.
The site is best reached by car or from the station, with parking located right nearby for easy access. Visitors should note that the open roof design means interior conditions change throughout the day as natural light shifts.
The wooden structure was built from 25,000 Akita cypress trees that aged for 60 years before construction, forming one of the largest wooden domes globally. This extended material preparation shows the careful craftsmanship invested in creating this building.
