Koshimizu Genseikaen sits between the Okhotsk Sea and Lake Tofutsu, featuring rolling hills covered in native flowers during the summer months. The terrain opens up gradually as you move through the space, revealing different flower zones.
The site was established as a natural garden to protect and maintain the native flora of northern Hokkaido. It was designated within Abashiri Quasi-National Park to give it official protection status.
The park is home to more than 70 varieties of native flowers, including orange ezo-sukashiyuri lilies and white seasonal blooms that visitors encounter throughout their walk.
Well-marked walking paths guide you through the park without needing a map or special navigation skills. The best time to visit is from late April through October when most of the flowers are blooming.
About half of all bird species found throughout Hokkaido live in this area, making it a key destination for birdwatchers. These diverse birds use the flowering hills for food and nesting throughout the seasons.
