Abashiri City Folk Museum

The Abashiri City Folk Museum exhibits artifacts and documents showcasing the natural and cultural history of the Hokkaido region through different periods.

Founded by Yonemura Kioe and designed by architect Yoshiya Tanoue, the museum first opened its doors on November 3, 1936 as Kitami Kyodo Yakata.

The museum collection contains three thousand archaeological and ethnographic objects, including materials from the Moyoro Shell Mound and items from Satsumon and Okhotsk cultures.

The museum buildings, representing different phases of architect Yoshiya Tanoue's style, are designated as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
