Iwamizawa Rail Center, Railway maintenance center in Iwamizawa, Japan
The Iwamizawa Rail Center is a manufacturing and maintenance facility for railway components located north of Iwamizawa Station. The complex produces continuous welded rails and components used in rail networks across Hokkaido.
The main building was constructed between 1898 and 1899 as a repair workshop for the Hokkaido Coal Mine Railway. The structure retains its original brick architecture from that period.
The building displays a five-pointed star emblem from the Hokkaido Coal Mine Railway on its front, one of only five such symbols still visible across the region. This mark reflects the area's connection to rail transport history and its role in developing the region's infrastructure.
The facility is located north of the city and is not open for casual visits, requiring advance arrangements for guided tours. Planning ahead is important as access is limited to scheduled group visits.
The facility contains rails manufactured in 1876 by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, representing the oldest railway tracks in Hokkaido. These historic rails are rare surviving pieces from the region's earliest railway development.
