Hirayu Falls, Mountain waterfall in Hirayu Onsen, Japan.
Hirayu Falls is a waterfall in the mountainous Okuhida area near Takayama, dropping around 64 meters along dark rock faces. It flows through a steep forested gorge and can be seen from a viewing point near the base.
The waterfall was listed among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, a designation that drew wider attention to the Okuhida area. Before that recognition, the site was mainly known to those already visiting the nearby hot spring villages.
Hirayu Falls sits in the Okuhida hot spring area, and many visitors pair a trip to the waterfall with a stop at one of the nearby onsen. This link between the waterfall and bathing culture shapes how most people experience the place.
The waterfall is reachable from Takayama by a direct bus to Hirayu Onsen, followed by a short walk to the viewing area. The path to the base is accessible and well marked, though the ground can be slippery near the water.
In winter, part of the falling water freezes into a thick wall of ice while the rest continues to flow behind it. The frozen section is lit up after dark, drawing visitors who come specifically to see this cold-weather display.
