Port of Omaezaki, Maritime ports in Omaezaki and Makinohara, Japan
The Port of Omaezaki is a working port on the Pacific coast of Shizuoka Prefecture, positioned between the cities of Omaezaki and Makinohara. It combines a commercial cargo area with an active fishing section, including warehouses, terminals, and a small waterfront market.
The port grew in the early 20th century as a trading stop along the Pacific coast route between Tokyo and Osaka. Its position along one of Japan's busiest sea lanes helped it develop into both a cargo hub and a fishing base over the following decades.
Local fishermen bring their daily catch to the NABURA market inside the port, where six small shops sell fresh fish and seafood directly to visitors. It is one of the few places in the area where you can watch the catch being sorted and sold the same morning.
The port is easy to reach by car via roads that connect to the main routes crossing the prefecture. The fishing section and market are open to visitors, but parts of the cargo area are restricted and not accessible to the general public.
Cape Omaezaki, just next to the port, is one of the few spots in Japan where you can watch both sunrise and sunset over the sea from the same point. The cape marks the boundary between Suruga Bay and the open Pacific Ocean.
