新浦和橋, Bridge connecting Matsue and Sakaiminato over Lake Nakaumi, Japan.
The Shinpuwa Bridge links Matsue in Shimane Prefecture with Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture across Lake Nakaumi. It stretches for approximately 1.7 kilometers and features steep ramps on both sides to allow ships to pass underneath.
The project was completed between 1997 and 2004, replacing an older drawbridge that frequently opened for passing ships. The new structure aimed to provide permanent traffic improvement between the two shores.
The bridge carries a Japanese name reflecting its role connecting two prefectures. For visitors, it has become a notable landmark showing how infrastructure reshaped daily life in this region.
The bridge is easily accessible by car or bus, with viewpoints on both sides where you can stop. Visitors should be cautious during rain, as the ramps can become slippery.
Photos taken with telephoto lenses create an optical illusion that makes the bridge appear far steeper than it actually is. These images spread widely online, turning it into a popular photography subject.
