Former Nagoya Court of Appeals Building

Former Nagoya Court of Appeals Building, Baroque revival courthouse in Shirakabe, Nagoya, Japan.

The Former Nagoya Court of Appeals Building is a brick structure with granite accents that blends European and Japanese design elements. Inside are a central marble staircase, large stained glass windows, and former detention cells.

The building opened in 1922 under architect Yamashita Keijirō as a court from early modern Japan. It served the judiciary until 1979, when it became the city archives.

The building shows how Japan adopted European styles for its own public institutions. The rooms reflect how the judiciary expressed authority and order through architecture in the early 1900s.

The building is near Shiyakusyo Station and offers wheelchair access. The best time to visit is in the morning when spaces are less crowded.

The building preserves a reconstructed meeting hall from the Taisho period that shows how courtrooms looked over a century ago. This room offers visitors a glimpse into how justice was practiced then.
