Stations of Ueno Zoo Monorail, Monorail stations in Ueno Zoo, Japan.
The Stations of Ueno Zoo Monorail were the two stops of a suspended rail line that ran through the grounds of Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. The line connected two points within the park, giving visitors a short ride between sections that would otherwise require a longer walk.
The line opened in 1957 and is considered Japan's first monorail. It ran for over six decades before closing in 2023.
The monorail stations represented an intersection of German engineering principles and Japanese transportation innovation, featuring rubber tires instead of traditional steel wheels.
The system closed in 2023, so the stations are no longer in operation and cannot be used. The zoo itself remains open, and the grounds can be visited on foot.
This was not only Japan's first monorail but also the world's first monorail built inside a zoo. It ran on rubber tires rather than steel wheels, which was an unusual choice for a rail system of this kind.
