東光寺

Tōkō-ji is a Buddhist temple in Yamagata featuring traditional Japanese architecture with curved tile roofs, heavy wooden beams, and intricate carved details adorning walls and doorways. The grounds spread across multiple levels with separate buildings and garden spaces that create distinct areas for walking and prayer.

The grounds are easy to explore on foot, with marked paths connecting buildings and garden areas across different levels. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time for wandering, as some staircases between levels can be steep.

The temple houses a collection of ancient Buddhist scrolls and artifacts, including rare manuscripts from the earliest phases of Buddhism's development in Japan. These works offer insights into religious history that go beyond what most visitors expect to find.
