Dairyū-ji, Buddhist temple in Gifu, Japan
The Dairyū-ji temple buildings integrate traditional Japanese architecture with natural elements, featuring detailed woodwork and carefully maintained gardens on its grounds.
Established during the Asuka period under Empress Jitō's reign in the 7th century, the temple later transitioned from Shingon to Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism.
The temple holds a prominent 13.7-meter Buddha statue, constructed over 38 years until 1832, making it Japan's largest lacquered Buddhist figure.
Visitors can reach the temple via a 15-minute bus ride from JR Gifu Station to the Gifu Koen stop, followed by a 5-minute walk.
Each year, the temple conducts a ceremonial burning of approximately 10,000 daruma dolls, earning it the name Daruma Kannon.
