Biwajima-bridge, Steel and concrete bridge in Nagoya, Japan
Biwajima Bridge is a steel and concrete structure that crosses the Shonai River and connects Nagoya's western district with Kiyosu City. The construction spans 177.3 meters and joins two urban areas across the waterway.
The original structure was built in 1622 during the Edo period as two separate spans divided by a river island. This design served important trade routes connecting different parts of the region.
The bridge sits where merchants have gathered for centuries to trade goods between Nagoya and surrounding areas along an old road. This historic marketplace shaped the region and left marks in local traditions.
Renovation work has been ongoing since October 2021 with temporary passages keeping traffic moving until 2030. Check current conditions before visiting as construction may affect how the bridge can be used.
The bridge shows two different engineering techniques: a Gerber steel girder system on the west side and reinforced concrete girders on the east side. This mix of construction methods makes it technically interesting and visibly different in design.
