Sakae Mori no Chikagai, Underground shopping center in Sakae District, Nagoya, Japan.
Sakae Mori no Chikagai is an underground shopping center beneath Nagoya streets with six main shopping streets containing retail stores, restaurants, and service shops. The complex spreads through interconnected corridors that run beneath the district.
The center opened in 1957 as the first underground shopping area in Sakae district. Its development coincided with the opening of the Higashiyama subway line.
The corridors feature decorations and design elements inspired by forests and natural themes, showing how Japanese design brings nature into underground urban spaces.
Access is direct from Sakae Station, and multiple exits lead to the surface and nearby attractions. The underground setting provides shelter from weather and makes navigation straightforward with numbered street sections.
Each section follows a numbered street naming system with six distinct areas: Kita Ichiban-gai, Kita Ni Ban-gai, Chuo Ichiban-gai, Minami Ichiban-gai, Minami Ni Ban-gai, and Minami San Ban-gai. This organized system helps visitors remember where they are and locate shops easily.
