Namioka Castle, Mountain castle ruins in Aomori, Japan

Namioka Castle extends across a hilltop with dimensions of 1,200 meters east to west and 600 meters north to south, featuring eight distinct fortified areas.

The castle was constructed in the 1460s by the Namioka Kitabatake clan and fell to Oura Tamenobu's forces during a siege in 1578.

The castle grounds contained four shrines at its corners, following the layout pattern of ancient Heian-kyo, the capital city now known as Kyoto.

Visitors can reach the castle ruins by taking a 15-minute walk from Namioka Station or driving 15 minutes from the Namioka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered over 50,000 artifacts, including weapons, agricultural tools, and household items, revealing details about medieval Japanese life.
