Yubara Onsen, building in Okayama Prefecture, Japan
Yubara Onsen is a hot spring facility in a mountain area of Okayama Prefecture with free open-air baths fed by naturally warm water from underground. The site includes simple but welcoming buildings that blend into the forest landscape, plus foot and hand baths and a public bathhouse called Yumoto Onsenkan alongside the main pools.
The hot springs at Yubara have been used for over a thousand years, particularly by workers in traditional iron production called Tatara, who bathed in the warm water to recover. Over the centuries, the site developed into a known place of rest and healing that remains in use today.
The baths here represent a long-standing practice of using natural hot water for rest and wellness in daily life. Visitors often come with family or friends and spend quiet time in the warm water, treating the experience as a moment to pause and connect with others in a peaceful setting.
The facility is open year-round with no entrance fee for the outdoor baths and is easily accessible on foot with parking nearby. Rental swimsuits are available for women, and a local tourist center can provide maps and information about the area.
A distinctive feature is the free, mixed open-air bath called Sunayu at the base of a dam where hot water rises directly from underground, constantly refreshing the water. Visitors can bathe here at any time of day or night at no cost while overlooking the river and forest-covered hills.
