Shirarahama

Shirarahama, Beach in Shirahama, Japan.

Shirarahama is a stretch of coastline along the Pacific Ocean in Shirahama, known for its white sand that extends for 800 meters (half a mile). The water is clear and meets a curved shoreline bordered by rocky formations at both ends.

The beach received its name in the 17th century when fishermen first documented the white color of the sand officially. In the 20th century, the area was developed into a seaside resort while preserving the natural coastal formation.

The name means white sand beach, and locals still use traditional methods to maintain the natural beauty of the coastline. During summer evenings, small groups gather near the water to watch the sunset over the Pacific.

Visitors should arrive during the swimming season from July to September when lifeguards are on duty and equipment rentals are available. Buses from Izukyu-Shimoda Station run hourly and bring travelers directly to the coastal area.

The sand grains contain quartz fragments that produce a slight crunching sound when walking. On days with little wind, you can hear the noise clearly when walking barefoot along the shore.
