Hakuchi Castle

Hakuchi Castle sits on elevated terrain with views across surrounding valleys and mountain passages in eastern Shikoku. The stone fortification features wooden structures and multi-tiered walls positioned across multiple levels of the hillside.

The castle developed during the feudal period as part of a network of military posts controlling transportation routes across the region. Its strategic position was essential for governing and defending eastern Shikoku territories.

The castle displays traditional Japanese architecture through its wooden structures and multi-tiered stone walls that remain visible today. Visitors can observe how the design served both defensive and symbolic functions within the regional landscape.

Access is through marked hiking trails that wind up forested slopes with varying difficulty levels. Sturdy footwear, water, and a backpack are needed since the route is hilly and sometimes slippery underfoot.

Watchtowers were positioned to have direct line of sight to neighboring castles and could use signal fires for communication. Visitors today can trace these sight lines and understand how messages traveled across mountains in medieval times.
