立源寺, Buddhist temple in Meguro district, Japan.
Ryigenji is a Buddhist temple in Tokyo with multiple buildings including the Niomon Gate, the Dai-Hondo main hall, the Shorodo bell tower, and the Amidado hall set on elevated grounds. The temple grounds are carefully arranged and offer various religious spaces for worship and ceremonies.
The temple was founded in 808 during the Heian period by Jikaku Daishi. Its importance grew when Tokugawa Iemitsu institutionalized the worship of Fudo throughout the city.
The temple is dedicated to Fudo Myoo, an important deity in Tendai Buddhism, and houses a large seated statue of Dainichi Nyorai made in 1683 inside the main hall.
You can reach the temple with a 10-minute walk from Fudo-mae Station on the Tokyo Meguro Line. The 28th of each month features special festivals and events at the temple.
The temple grounds include Dokko-no-taki, a small waterfall and pond said to have appeared where the founder struck his ceremonial staff into the ground. Visitors still use this spot as a special place for prayers today.
