Tatenoumi, Mountain park in Suwa, Japan
Tatenoumi is a mountain park in the Suwa area featuring grassy meadows, walking trails, and a viewing platform. From here, visitors can see Lake Suwa and the Japanese Alps stretching across the horizon.
The site began as an irrigation reservoir serving rice farms in Suwa City. In the 1920s it transformed into a place for ice sports, a purpose it served until the mid-1900s.
The park serves as a gathering place where locals enjoy time outdoors and connect with the landscape. The quiet paths and views across the water make it a spot where people come to spend peaceful moments in nature.
The park is open from mid-April through mid-November with free parking available for cars and tour buses. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since some trails can be steep and slippery when wet.
The site sits at an elevation where natural ice formed each winter, attracting athletes who competed there in ice sports competitions. This seasonal transformation no longer occurs due to changing climate conditions.
