Adachi City Museum is a local museum in Ōyata that presents collections of historical artifacts, photographs, and regional documents displayed across multiple exhibition rooms. These spaces focus on exploring the local heritage and development of the city.
The museum opened in November 1986. It closed for renovation in August 2008 and reopened in March 2009 with displays themed on the eastern outskirts of Edo-Tokyo. A second closure began in January 2023, and the museum reopened in April 2025 under the slogan "From a local history museum to an art museum."
Residents' groups registered with the museum take part in its research, exhibitions and events. These include the Adachi Historical Society, founded in 1968, and the Adachi Folk Performing Arts Preservation Society, founded in 1978, which keeps local hayashi music and kagura dance alive. Volunteers from the Hakuyūkai give exhibition talks on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
The museum is at 5-20-1 Ōyata, Adachi-ku, Tokyo. It is closed for renovation from January 2023, with reopening scheduled for April 2025. The permanent galleries were previously renewed in March 2009 under the theme "Edo-Tokyo's eastern suburbs".
The museum holds the Ayanase Kaneko family documents, records on the Shinsengumi post at Goheishinden set up from 13 March to 1 April 1868. The head of the Ayanase Shinsengumi research group is the owner of an unagi restaurant in present-day Ayanase 4-chome, where the post once stood.
