Kanaz Forest of Creation, Art museum in Awara, Japan
Kanaz Forest of Creation is an art museum on wooded grounds in Awara that combines indoor galleries with outdoor installations. Fifteen sculptures and artworks are positioned along walking paths through trees, creating a blend of nature and contemporary creation.
The site emerged from the tradition of Echizen roof tile making, a local craft that shaped Fukui Prefecture for centuries. This heritage of regional craftsmanship laid the foundation for today's artistic community on the grounds.
The location serves as a working artist community where creators regularly produce new works on the grounds. This living space lets visitors connect with contemporary art creation in progress rather than only finished pieces.
The site opens daily from 9 in the morning until 5 in the evening with free entry. Wear comfortable walking shoes since many works are positioned along forest paths, and visit during daylight hours to see the installations properly in their natural setting.
The museum operates on-site glass and pottery workshops with professional equipment for glass blowing and sand blasting techniques. Visitors can watch artists work in real time or try these hands-on crafts themselves during their visit.
