Akōbō Kofun Cluster, Ancient burial site cluster in Oirase, Japan
Akōbō Kofun Cluster is a group of ancient burial mounds spread across three main archaeological areas near Oirase. More than 60 visible earthen graves remain today, containing artifacts and human remains from community leaders of the early medieval period.
The burial site dates from the 7th to 9th centuries, a period when earthen mound graves were a common practice in Japan. Later excavations uncovered more than 100 burials and pit graves, providing evidence of how ancient communities here organized their ceremonies and valued their dead.
The burial mounds served as final resting places for local leaders and reveal social hierarchy through their contents like weapons and ornaments. Visitors can still observe how the graves varied in their furnishings, reflecting differences in wealth and status among the buried individuals.
A nearby museum within walking distance displays excavated objects and provides background information about the burial practices. Visitors should plan to see both the museum and the mounds themselves to get a complete picture of how people lived and were memorialized here.
The excavation revealed rare items like ancient horse equipment and farming tools among the burial goods, showing that these leaders were also riders and farmers. Such everyday objects offer a different insight into real life than weapons and jewelry alone would suggest.
