Akōbō Kofun Cluster, Ancient burial site cluster in Oirase, Japan
The Akōbō Kofun Cluster encompasses three main archaeological locations: Akōbō Ruins, Tenjinyama Ruins, and Jūsanmori Ruins, containing over 60 visible burial mounds.
Archaeological excavations between 1989 and 1990 revealed 108 late-period burial mounds and 8 pit graves, dating from the 7th to 9th centuries.
The burial mounds, measuring 10 meters in diameter and 1.1 meters in height, contained swords, ornaments, horse equipment, and farming tools from ancient clan leaders.
The Akōbō Kofun Museum, located 400 meters from the cluster, displays numerous artifacts and provides educational programs for visitors interested in archaeological studies.
The site received national historic designation in 2007, preserving evidence of burial practices from the Asuka, Nara, and early Heian periods of Japanese history.
