Hacchi, Cultural center and museum in Mikkamachi, Japan.
Hacchi is a museum and cultural center in Mikkamachi designed to recreate the streets and alleyways of downtown Hachinohe. The layout combines open spaces with smaller corridors that mirror the character of the surrounding city environment.
The center opened in 2011 and was designed by architect Shōichi Haryū with an innovative approach to structure. Its modern design earned it the Good Design Award for how it reinterprets traditional urban forms.
The interior displays products from the Aomori and Tohoku regions, including hand-carved wooden horses and traditional Tsugaru-nuri lacquerware that reflect local craftsmanship. These items show how regional artisans continue working methods that have been part of daily life for generations.
The center is located in Mikkamachi and operates most days from morning until evening, except on Tuesdays and during the New Year holiday period. Plan your visit accordingly to ensure you arrive when it is open.
On the first floor sits a clock featuring carved wooden lion heads that perform mechanical movements every hour. This crafted detail becomes an unexpectedly entertaining moment during any visit.
