Kajō Park, Urban park in Yamagata, Japan
Kajō Park is a large green space in Yamagata built on the remains of a historic fortress. The grounds feature ancient fortifications with multiple concentric moats, raised earthen ridges, and stone walls that date back to the feudal period.
A fortress was founded here in 1356, and then rebuilt and expanded by a regional lord between 1592 and 1614. That period of rebuilding shaped the layout and structures that remain visible today.
The site houses several museums where visitors can explore art collections, local history, and items connected to the region's past. These institutions help people understand how the area developed and what mattered to those who lived here.
The park is open daily with clear pathways for exploring the fortification structures and museum areas. Visiting in the morning gives you better views of the old structures and fewer crowds to navigate around.
The name comes from a 1600 battle when fog hid the fortress from enemy view. Visitors today often connect this historical moment to the site's somewhat mysterious character.
