Takamatsu Central Arcade, Commercial district in Takamatsu, Japan
Takamatsu Central Arcade is a network of eight connected covered shopping areas stretching 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) through the center of Takamatsu. The passage links Takamatsu Castle to Ritsurin Garden and houses more than 1,000 shops beneath continuous glass canopies.
The arcades grew from a local marketplace and expanded over decades into the longest covered shopping street in Japan. The individual sections were gradually joined together to shelter residents and travelers from rain and sun.
The central crystal dome rises above the passage and takes the form of an upturned udon bowl, echoing the noodle culture of Kagawa Prefecture. Visitors see how traditional craftsmanship and modern architecture meet in a public space.
Most shops open around 10:00 and close by 19:00, though some restaurants stay open later. The covered sections allow walking in any weather and are easy to explore on foot.
The northern zone near the castle houses international brands in an open plaza area, while Lion Dori farther south focuses on local Sanuki udon restaurants. Each section carries its own name and shows a different mix of offerings.
