Government of Takamatsu, Kagawa

The Government of Takamatsu is a modern administrative center featuring an eight-story main structure and a two-story East Wing with multipurpose halls. The building houses prefectural offices and public gathering spaces designed for community events and functions.

Completed in 1958 under architect Kenzo Tange's direction, the structure marked the beginning of a new era in post-war modernist architecture across Japan. Tange's approach established influential standards for public buildings during this period.

The ground floor displays ceramic wall art by local artist Genichiro Inokuma, featuring geometric patterns that reflect principles from Japanese tea ceremonies. This artistic installation merges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.

The building is open on weekdays from 8:30 am to 5:15 pm and welcomes visitors at no charge. A free observation deck in the upper portion provides views across the city.

The structure uses an innovative 3 by 3 meter core system that eliminates the need for internal walls throughout. This enables open and flexible space design within the building.
