Kansai International Airport interchange, Highway interchange at Sky Gate Bridge R in Izumisano, Japan.

Kansai International Airport interchange is a transport hub connecting the mainland to the airport via the Sky Gate Bridge R, which spans across Osaka Bay with two decks stacked vertically. The structure carries six lanes of car traffic above and two railway lines below.

The interchange began operations in 1994 as a key component of the infrastructure project that established Kansai International Airport on a man-made island in the bay. This represented a significant milestone in Japanese transportation development.

The interchange represents Japanese engineering excellence through its integration with the world's longest double-decked truss bridge configuration.

The route is clearly marked for both cars and trains, and the structure handles large volumes of traffic during peak times. Expect longer travel times during rush hours when passenger volumes are highest.

When Typhoon Jebi struck in 2018, a large tanker collided with the bridge during the storm, forcing an emergency closure. The incident revealed how severe weather can threaten major transport infrastructure.
