Toranomon Hills, Skyscraper complex in Toranomon, Tokyo, Japan
Toranomon Hills is a series of four high-rise towers in Toranomon, Tokyo, Japan, whose tallest reaches 266 meters and are linked by a connected ground-level pedestrian system. The towers contain apartments, offices, a hotel and public areas spread across multiple levels.
Planning started in 1946 with a traffic project for a new ring road that was prepared over decades before construction began in April 2011. The first towers opened in June 2014, while further buildings followed in later years.
The name Toranomon means Tiger Gate, recalling a vanished portal of Edo Castle that once stood at this crossroads. Today the towers carry a historical memory forward while serving as mixed quarters for living, working and gathering.
Visitors can walk through the connected ground-level pedestrian areas and raised gardens distributed between the towers. Information boards and orientation points help navigation across the entire site.
The development was built over a newly constructed arterial road that runs directly beneath the towers, combining traffic with vertical construction. This arrangement allowed simultaneous completion of road infrastructure and high-rise development on the same site.
