Mount Atago, Sacred mountain in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan

Mount Atago rises 924 meters above Kyoto, featuring stone steps through dense forests leading to the summit where a shrine stands.

The mountain became a religious center 1300 years ago when Buddhist monk Taicho-zenji established it as a pilgrimage destination alongside En-no-gyoza.

The Sennichi Mairi pilgrimage occurs annually from July 31 to August 1, with thousands climbing at night for fire protection blessings.

The ascent from Kiyotaki village covers 4 kilometers of steep terrain, requiring 3 to 5 hours for a round trip with limited facilities.

As the highest peak in Kyoto, Mount Atago houses the main shrine of a network of 900 fire protection shrines across Japan.
