Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium, Public aquarium in Miyagino, Japan.
Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium is a public aquarium in the Miyagino ward of Sendai with more than 25,000 marine creatures in its tanks. The largest tank displays the underwater world of the Sanriku coast with fish and invertebrates found in the local waters off northern Japan.
The aquarium opened on July 1, 2015 as part of the reconstruction efforts following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The facility partly replaced an earlier aquarium in Miyagi Prefecture that had been destroyed by the disaster.
The facility presents daily performances where dolphins, sea lions and birds perform together in the Stadium Live show. This type of coordinated animal presentation has been part of Japanese aquarium culture for decades and regularly draws families from across the region.
Visitors can reach the aquarium with a 15-minute walk from Nakano-Sakaemachi Station or by taking a dedicated shuttle bus that runs every 30 minutes. The facility sits within a larger shopping and entertainment complex, so visitors can combine the trip with other activities.
The aquarium houses five different penguin species in a specialized gallery, making it one of the few places in Japan where visitors can see that many species in one location. The penguin zone allows observations both above and below water through large glass panels.
