The museum originated in 1985 to mark the centenary of Hokkaido Development Commission's branch relocation to Tomakomai and underwent renovation in 2013.
The institution preserves and exhibits materials about Mount Tarumae, Yufutsu wilderness, Ainu culture, folklore, and regional artistic expressions.
Located at Suehiro-cho 3-9-7, the museum operates from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM with admission fees of 300 yen for adults and 200 yen for students.
The museum maintains specialized collections focusing on the natural landscape of Mount Tarumae and the archaeological findings from the Yufutsu plains.
