Inkura Falls

Inkura Falls, Natural waterfall in Shiraoi, Japan

Inkura Falls is a waterfall in Shiraoi that plunges over two distinct tiers through dense forest, reaching a total height of 44 meters. The water flows across a width of about 10 meters, giving the cascade a striking presence within the forested mountainous terrain.

The waterfall gained recognition through its inclusion in Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls list, establishing its place among the country's respected natural landmarks. This official recognition helped draw attention to the site and encouraged its preservation as a natural heritage area.

The waterfall holds deep meaning for the Ainu people, who have inhabited this region for generations and view natural water features as sacred places. Local guides often share stories about the mountain stream's role in traditional hunting and gathering routes through these forests.

Visitors can reach the falls by following marked trails along the Toishi mountain stream, with the sound of falling water helping to guide them through the forest. The paths are well-established but feature varying inclines, so comfortable hiking footwear is recommended.

During winter months, sections of the waterfall transform into frozen formations, creating natural ice sculptures against the rocky cliff face. This seasonal phenomenon is uncommon in the region and offers a completely different appearance compared to its flowing summer state.
