Basho's Oku no Hosomichi Haiku Journey Museum

This specialized museum displays manuscripts, interactive exhibits, and three-dimensional visual presentations that chronicle the famous poet Matsuo Basho's transformative journey through Japan's northern provinces during the seventeenth century.

Officially opened on April 8, 2012, the museum commemorates Basho's legendary 1689 expedition covering over 2,400 kilometers across Japan, which resulted in his masterpiece travel diary 'Oku no Hosomichi' documenting his five-month pilgrimage.

The facility serves as a cultural hub promoting traditional Japanese poetry through haiku writing workshops, calligraphy classes, and annual poetry contests that foster appreciation for classical Japanese literature and its philosophical connections to nature.

Located at 2-26 Funamachi in Ogaki City, the museum operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with modest admission fees, accessible by train via JR Ogaki Station followed by a short bus or taxi ride.

The museum features a recreated garden inspired by landscapes described in Basho's poetry, allowing visitors to experience the natural environments that influenced his haiku compositions during his historic journey through Japan.
