本町館, Historical movie theater in Higashiyama district, Kyoto, Japan
Honmachi-kan is a movie theater in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto, housed in a three-story concrete building with around 85 seats. The screening room uses digital projection and offers a varied film program.
Honmachi-kan first opened on August 31, 1920, as a permanent movie house in Kyoto. After World War II it was rebuilt, and over the following decades it went through several rounds of renovation.
The theater sits in a neighborhood where old wooden townhouses and newer buildings stand side by side. It draws a loyal local crowd that treats the venue as a regular part of their routine.
The theater is a short walk from Shichijo Station on the Keihan Main Line in eastern Kyoto. Because the hall is small, arriving a bit early on busy evenings is a good idea.
During the 1970s, the theater added live entertainment to its film screenings, which was an unusual move for a small neighborhood cinema at the time. This programming shift helped it attract a new audience when many other Japanese cinemas were losing viewers.
