比婆山久米神社, Shinto shrine in Japan
Hibayama Kume Shrine is a Shinto shrine built in the traditional Taisha-zukuri style on a mountain near Yasugi. The structure features wooden elements with a thatched roof in a simple, dignified design, set among trees and mountain vegetation.
The site appears in old documents like the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki and Engi Shiki, connected to the goddess Izanami from Japanese creation stories. The current building was rebuilt after a fire in 1935 and again in the postwar period.
The shrine honors Izanami, a creator goddess from ancient Japanese stories, whose resting place is believed to be on this mountain. People visit today to pray for safe births and healthy children, a practice that connects visitors to traditions that have shaped the community for generations.
You can drive to a free parking area or take a bus to the mountain base and walk from there. The path offers pleasant views of Yasugi and the surrounding mountain landscape as you make your way up.
A rare bamboo species called Onmyoudake with unusually large leaves grows on the mountainside and is registered as a natural monument. According to legend, this bamboo grew from a walking stick that the goddess Izanami planted while climbing the mountain.
