Nakasendō Ochiai Stone Pavement, Historic stone pavement on Nakasendō route, Nakatsugawa, Japan
The 840-meter stone road winds through cedar trees and mountain landscapes, connecting the post towns of Nakatsugawa and Magome along the Nakasendō route.
The Owari Clan constructed this cobblestone path during the Edo period to improve transportation and maintain slope stability between Kyoto and Edo.
The stone pavement represents traditional Japanese engineering methods, featuring precisely laid cobblestones that have endured centuries of use by merchants and travelers.
Visitors can reach the pavement by taking a limited express train to Nakatsugawa Station, followed by a local bus to the trailhead near Magome.
A monument along the path displays a haiku written by poet Masaoka Shiki in 1891, marking his journey through this mountain passage.
