Kouri Bridge, Transportation bridge in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan
Kouri Bridge is a sea-crossing bridge in Okinawa Prefecture that connects Yagaji Island to Kouri Island, running entirely over open ocean water. It has separate lanes for vehicles and pedestrians, with a walkway running along its full length.
The bridge opened in 2005, replacing the ferry service that had previously been the only way to reach Kouri Island. Before it was built, the island was difficult to access for both visitors and residents.
Kouri Island is known locally as the island of love, and the bridge is a popular spot for couples visiting the area. This reputation comes from a local legend similar to the story of Adam and Eve, describing two people who first discovered life on the island.
The bridge is open to both walkers and drivers year-round with no seasonal restrictions. Going on foot early in the morning gives you a clearer view of the surrounding ocean before car traffic picks up.
At about 2 kilometers long, it is one of the longest sea bridges in Okinawa. From the middle of the crossing, land is not visible in one direction, giving walkers the feeling of standing in the middle of the open ocean.
