Irises screen, Pair of folding screens at Nezu Museum, Japan
The six-panel folding screens display Japanese irises in ultramarine blue against a gold leaf background in a repeating pattern across the surface.
The screens resided at the Nishi Honganji Buddhist temple in Kyoto for over 200 years before their acquisition by the Nezu Museum in 1913.
The screens draw inspiration from The Tales of Ise, depicting irises near a river where a protagonist composed an acrostic poem.
The Nezu Museum presents these National Treasure screens in conjunction with the garden's natural iris blooms during early May exhibitions.
The artist Ogata Kōrin used stencils to create consistent flower shapes while limiting his palette to ultramarine blue and green on gold.
