Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum, Art museum in Minami-Aoyama, Japan
The Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum is an art museum in Minami-Aoyama housed in a building designed by architect Junzo Sakakura featuring a convex lens-shaped roof above stacked concrete blocks. The house opens into multiple gallery spaces across different levels where his creative output is displayed.
This was Okamoto's residence and studio for decades before his death in 1996, when it was transformed into a public museum. The conversion happened quickly, opening to visitors just two years later.
The museum displays Okamoto's original artworks, sketches, and sculptures throughout the spaces where he created them. Visitors can see his workspace with unfinished canvases and paintbrushes left exactly as they were.
Visitors should remove their shoes and carry them in provided bags before entering the gallery spaces. This practice helps preserve the intimate feeling of the artist's former home while viewing the collections.
The museum preserves the original salon where Okamoto conceived many of his monumental works, including designs that would become internationally recognized. Walking through this space offers insight into his creative process and ambitions.
