Takao 599 Museum, Natural history museum at Mount Takao, Japan.
The Takao 599 Museum is a natural history and city museum in Takaomachi, at the foot of Mount Takao, close to Kiyotaki Station on the cable car line. It houses a Nature Collection of preserved wildflowers and insects set in acrylic resin, alongside a large projection wall and a hands-on play area.
The museum opened in 2015, replacing an earlier natural science museum that stood on the same site. The new building offered more space and updated displays to keep pace with the growing number of visitors to the mountain.
The Nature Wall uses projection to show how Mount Takao changes through the seasons and which animals live there at different times of year. Visitors can take in the rhythm of the mountain without setting foot on the trails.
The museum is within walking distance of Kiyotaki Station on the cable car line, so it fits well into a day trip that includes a ride up the mountain. It is worth checking opening hours in advance, as they can vary depending on the time of year.
The museum's name comes directly from the height of Mount Takao, which stands at 599 meters (1,965 feet). This choice of name signals that the building's purpose is to help visitors understand the mountain in its actual scale before they set off to explore it.
