日比野五鳳紀念美術館, Art museum in Godo, Japan

The 日比野五鳳記念美術館 is an art museum in Godo, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, dedicated to the calligrapher 日比野五鳳. The building is modest in scale and holds a collection of around 300 of his works, displayed in rotating spring and fall exhibitions.

日比野五鳳 was born in 1901 in Godo and grew up with his grandparents after losing his mother at a young age. He later moved to Kyoto, where he taught at a high school and devoted decades to calligraphy, eventually receiving a government arts award for his work. The museum was established in his hometown after his death to preserve and display his legacy.

日比野五鳳 called himself "Gifu's Tanishi," a reference to a small freshwater snail, suggesting a humble and grounded character. This spirit carries through the way the museum presents his work: without decoration or ceremony, letting the brushstrokes speak for themselves.

The museum is located near the public hall in Godo and is reachable by local transport or car, with signboards pointing the way. Planning a visit during the spring or fall exhibition periods gives access to the widest range of works on display.

Some of the works now displayed in the museum were originally donated by 日比野五鳳 to his hometown school during his lifetime. Seeing these early pieces alongside his later work lets visitors trace how his brushwork evolved over the course of his career.
