内大臣橋, Steel arch bridge in Misato, Japan
The Naidaijin Bridge is a steel arch bridge crossing a deep gorge between Misato and Yamato, soaring about 86 meters above the water. It features a two-tier through-truss structure designed to handle the challenging conditions of this mountainous region.
The bridge was completed in 1963 and was then the largest arch bridge in East Asia. It became essential for developing forest resources across the region, improving connections between Kumamoto and Miyazaki prefectures.
The name Naidaijin originates from the Heike clan refugees who settled in this valley after their defeat at the Battle of Dan-no-ura.
You can reach it via forest roads from both sides of the gorge. Be prepared for local road conditions, especially during the rainy season.
The structure features a two-tier through-truss design with a main span of 153 meters, connecting to multiple forest roads in the national reserve.
