田島神社

田島神社, Shinto shrine in Japan

Tajima Shrine is a small Shinto shrine in Ikuno ward, Osaka, featuring simple wooden structures and well-maintained grounds. The site has old stone lanterns and memorial stones that mark its long history in the neighborhood.

The shrine likely was founded in the late 1600s, though early records were lost in floods. In 1909 it was renamed from Tenjin Shrine to Tajima Shrine as part of a regional reorganization effort.

The shrine bears the name of its local district and honors Ishida Taijiro, a pioneer of glass lens craftsmanship whose innovations shaped the region. Visitors can observe the simple offerings and quiet prayers that show how this place remains woven into daily community life.

The shrine sits in a quiet residential area accessible on foot or by local bus from various parts of Osaka. Visitors should remove their shoes before entering certain areas and maintain respectful behavior, as this remains an active prayer site for the community.

The shrine honors Ishida Taijiro, a local inventor whose glass lens techniques made Osaka a center for eyeglass manufacturing. Each year on November 3rd, a festival celebrates his contributions, showing the close bond between the shrine and the area's craft heritage.
