願行寺, Buddhist temple in Shinagawa, Japan
Gangyoji is a Buddhist temple in Shinagawa featuring traditional wooden architecture with multiple buildings spread across its grounds. The layout and structures support both religious ceremonies and the daily routines of the monks who live there.
The temple was founded in 1639 under Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu and underwent major reconstruction in 1694 following a fire. This rebuilding was supported by Keisho-in, the mother of Shogun Tsunayoshi.
This temple serves as both a place of worship for Buddhist practitioners and a cemetery holding the graves of notable historical figures, including the Zen master Takuan Soho. This dual purpose reflects how such temples have functioned as important community centers throughout Japan.
The temple is about a 5-minute walk from Shimbamba Station on the Keikyu Main Line, making it easy to reach by train. Visitors should wear appropriate attire and follow local customs when entering the buildings.
The temple houses two gravestones for Zen master Takuan Soho, despite his explicit instructions to disciples not to build any memorial after his death in 1645. This defiance of his wishes reveals the deep respect his followers held for him.
