Rokusho-jinja, shrine in Akatsutsumi, Setagaya-ku
Rokusho-jinja is a small Shinto shrine located near Sengawa Station in Setagaya-ku, featuring simple structures framed by stone guardian dogs and moss-covered statuary. Stone fox figures stand beside the secondary building, while a stone lantern near the entrance and golden roof decorations add subtle details to the quiet grounds.
The shrine was originally founded by the Yanagita clan over two thousand years ago, with its first structure built on a mountain about one kilometer from its current location. In 718, it was relocated to where it stands today and later became known as Rokusho-jinja, named after six deities brought together there from other regional shrines including Samukawa and Hiratsuka.
Local residents visit regularly to pray and leave small offerings as part of their daily spiritual practice. The shrine serves as a quiet keeper of neighborhood traditions that continue without fanfare.
The shrine is best explored on foot, allowing you to take your time viewing the details at a leisurely pace. Nearby Sengawa Station provides easy access, and the quiet surroundings make it a good spot for a calm walk without crowds.
Visitors often overlook that the shrine houses six regional deities brought together from separate shrines in a rare combined arrangement. This distinctive feature explains its name Rokusho, referring to this gathering of gods rather than being a single-deity site.
