Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Machine Tools, Corporate museum for machine tools in Minokamo, Japan
The Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Machine Tools is a corporate museum in Minokamo, Japan, displaying machine tools, steam locomotives, vehicles, and aircraft in underground galleries. The space holds around 70 exhibits drawn from different fields of manufacturing and industrial production.
The museum opened in November 2019 to mark the 100th anniversary of Yamazaki Mazak Corporation, which started making machine tools in 1919. The collection reflects how Japanese manufacturing evolved over the course of the 20th century.
Several machines in the collection have been recognized as Mechanical Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, which gives the place a special standing. Visitors can see original machine tools from different periods of Japanese industry up close.
The galleries sit several meters underground, where temperatures stay stable throughout the year, so no special clothing is needed for comfort. Allow enough time to walk through all the sections without rushing, as the space is large and there is a lot to take in.
Among the industrial machines stands the Zan-Yuu-Soh, a traditional Japanese residence that was moved here from Nagoya. Its restoration took five years and was carried out with great care to keep the original construction techniques intact.
