Mount Hatobuki, Mountain summit in Kani City, Japan
Mount Hatobuki is a summit near Kani City in Gifu Prefecture, offering views toward the Northern Japanese Alps and the Kiso River from the top. Five trailheads, Oowaki, Shanzenji, Nishiyama, Ishihara, and Katakuriguchi, give access to the peak from different directions.
The mountain takes its name from its shape, which was said to resemble a resting dove, following a long-standing Japanese tradition of naming natural features after animals or familiar forms. This practice shows how local people read the landscape and found meaning in its contours.
Every spring since 2012, a festival at the foot of the mountain celebrates the blooming of katakuri wildflowers along the Kani River. Local people and visitors gather there to mark the change of season together in the natural park.
With five trailheads to choose from, it is easy to pick a starting point that matches your pace and how much time you have. Checking the weather before setting out and wearing sturdy footwear will make the hike more comfortable.
The hiking paths cross a natural colony of Shidekobushi trees, a species not often seen in this part of Japan, along with Hikagetsumugi, Mitsubatsutsuji, and Yamazakura. This mix of plants draws people who follow the seasonal changes in Japan's regional flora.
