Aigi Tunnel Group

The Aigi Tunnel Group consists of several railway tunnels that wind through the mountainous terrain of Aichi Prefecture, bearing witness to transportation development from the early industrial period. Construction of the tunnel group began around 1900 as part of railway development during Japan's Meiji restoration and represents the technical advances of that transformational period. These structures are key examples of the industrial modernization that reshaped the nation during this era.

The Japanese government designated these tunnels as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, recognizing their role in the nation's transportation development.

The tunnels are accessible via marked walking paths and situated in hilly terrain with clear signs to guide visitors. Wear appropriate footwear and prepare for changing weather conditions typical of mountainous areas.

The longest passages still display hand-laid stone masonry from the early construction period, showing directly how workers without modern machinery created these mountain openings. Such traditional building techniques are rarely visible elsewhere in this form.
